How to Show Up Confident for Your Headshot Session (No Modelling Experience Required)

Let’s be honest—being in front of a camera can feel somewhere between mildly uncomfortable and “absolutely not.” What do I do with my hands? Does my smile look natural? Do I need modeling experience for this?

Here’s the reality: you don’t. The key to looking good in your photos is feeling reasonably comfortable and trusting the process. Here’s how to show up feeling less anxious and more like yourself.

Trust Your Photographer

Find someone who makes you feel comfortable and actually understands what you need. Your photographer should guide you through the entire session so you can focus on being present rather than second-guessing every move.

I make a point of getting to know clients before we start shooting. The more we’ve talked beforehand, the less awkward it feels when the camera comes out. When you trust the process, the session stops feeling like a performance.

You’re Not Expected to Be a Model

You don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job. I’ll help you find angles that work, look natural rather than staged, and feel polished without feeling like someone else entirely.

You’re already doing the hard work of running a business – I’m just here to make you look like the professional you already are.

Not sure where to start?

Let's have a quick chat about what you actually need from your visuals. No hard sell, just a straightforward conversation.

Know Your ‘Why’

Whether it’s for LinkedIn, launching a business, updating your website, or replacing that photo from three years ago, knowing the purpose helps focus the session. When we’re clear on what these images need to do, we can create photos that actually serve a purpose.

Prep With Intention

Wear something that makes you feel like yourself on a good day. I always advise clients to dress as though they’re seeing their biggest client or prepping for a meeting where they’re about to sign a really large retainer – it’s about recognising the level of investment you’re making. Stay hydrated, get decent sleep, and bring a couple of outfit options. We can’t shoot what you haven’t brought.

Get in the right headspace: Once you book, I’ll send you my “Getting Camera Ready” guide. It’s not a rulebook – just some practical ideas and mindset tips to help you feel prepared rather than panicked. This isn’t just about creating great visuals – it’s also about actually enjoying the moment while the spotlight is on you. Most clients find the guide genuinely useful for getting into the right zone before the session.

Let Go of Perfection

The best photos happen when you’re not performing. If you’re nervous, that’s normal – most people are. Do a quick shoulder roll, big exhale (and I mean big) or a quick shimmy –  I’ve seen so many people feel exactly this awkward, and focus on the fact that we’re just having a conversation with a camera nearby.

Show Up as Yourself

The best headshots look like you – the real, professional version that your clients actually hire. During the session, I’ll help you find genuine moments where your personality comes through naturally. Your headshot isn’t about perfection – it’s about looking credible, approachable and recognisably like the person people will meet when they book a call with you.

A Collaborative Result

From the moment you book, I’m in your corner. I’ll handle the logistics and manage the moving parts so you can focus on your business. Running your own business can be a wild enough ride but your brand shoot shouldn’t feel that way.

While I provide the technical direction, the final gallery is a collaboration. You know your brand’s pulse better than anyone, so we’ll combine my vision with your specific goals. This ensures the results feel like a seamless extension of your business, rather than a generic template.

In short… the visuals resonate because of this combination: structure, direction and natural editing. That’s how we create photos that don’t just look good – they actually do the work for you.

Ready to get this sorted?

Book your branding session and I'll handle the rest—starting with making sure you know exactly what to bring and what to expect.
