What Not to Wear for your Brand Shoot (And why you should probably ignore me anyway)

I’m often asked for a definitive “dress code” for branding photoshoots, which is a bit like asking a photographer to pick your business model—good idea but not my area of expertise. Your personal branding is entirely about you. If your vibe is minimalist-cool and I suggested a neon pink suit, you’d (rightfully) question whether I’d actually looked at your website.

I’m a London brand photographer, not a personal stylist, and I’m much more interested in what actually works for you as a business owner than what’s trending on Instagram. That said, there’s a fine line between “authentic” and “unintentionally memorable,” so here are a few things that might be worth thinking about for your brand shoot.

The Practicalities

The Comfort Factor: This is genuinely non-negotiable. Please don’t wear anything that makes you feel like you’ve been vacuum-packed. If you’re constantly tugging at a hem or regretting a restrictive waistband, it shows in your face. Physical comfort translates to visual confidence, and I’d rather you look relaxed than runway-ready.

The “Would I Wear This to Meet a Client?” Test: If the answer is no, it probably shouldn’t make an appearance in your brand photography either. We all have beloved pieces that have seen better days—save those for the weekend and bring something that reflects where your business is now, not where it was a few years ago.

The Obvious One: Unless loungewear is genuinely part of your brand (sleep consultants, wellness coaches, I see you), let’s avoid the pyjamas. For everyone else, we’re aiming for “professional human” rather than “forgot the shoot was today.”

Still not sure what to wear?

Let's talk it through. Book a strategy call and we'll figure out what actually works for you and your brand.

At the end of the day, you know your industry and your clients far better than I do. My job is to handle the strategy and the shot list; yours is to show up as the version of yourself that your clients actually hire for your personal brand.

Whether that’s a floral maxi dress, a sharp black turtleneck, or a perfectly tailored suit, wear it with a bit of intention. Your brand images work best when you’ve put some thought into how you want to be seen—not because I’ve demanded it, but because you care about the impression you’re making as an entrepreneur.

The only thing that really matters? That you’ve shown up intentionally. Everything else, we can work with.Everything else, we can work with.
